Creating Fun Tests

JOS, Self

I really enjoy creating ideas for fun! Here are a few examples.

"45246"

What happens while watching the news during the morning of Biden's Inauguration to become the 46th President of the United States? A vision of “from chaos to bliss” done in character. Will this change work? Or, do people just want to be relax and chill? What do you think of my composition?

Concept: MX 5 "Break Free"

When you work with a car brand and have access to the product, then why not film? In this concept and editing test, I used 3 cameras (iPhone6, Rollei 372, and Canon EOS 1200d), a song from the band, Boris, my Partner (who you can see in some frames), and sound effects.

Now, I’m not even going to touch grading or the apertures used, because they are all over the place. Remember this is for fun.

A Decade Under The Influence

One of my favorite songs is “A Decade Under The Influence” from the band, Taking Back Sunday. This film, recorded in 2011, was a test for my concept of the video and to practice my editing skills in iMovie.

Camera: Sony MiniDV Digital 8mm

Schwarzkopf: A Declaration of Love - "Untreatable Disease "

Have you ever wondered if an ad used a different song?

I changed the audio and the frame rate of Schwarzkopf’s “You - A Declaration of Love” ad, and used Sparta’s “Untreatable Disease” for the music backdrop to examine how the visual mood changes.

With the song’s lyrics at the end, “You were right, To find your own way, Left behind, I'll follow someday…” I liked how there seems to be a tension release along with the leading actress’ happiness.

Thanks to TBWA Germany for the wonderful spot.

Everywhere You Go

A band from Nashville, Stereoblis, wrote this song, “Everywhere You Go”. My concept was to film in the dark, as the pop rock song’s title and lyrics lend a thought of a lover left in the dark and not yet ready to give up.

Filmed in 2015 a few months after moving to Germany, through the MacBook’s camera with no effects added. I think the desired effect comes through.

JOS Paris Post Promo: In My Dreams

After the reunion show. I created this video with recorded music and stock film.

JOS Paris Promo: Radio Star

After a 10-year hiatus, my band from the US performed in Paris. For the show, I created the concept, copy, edited live footage and recorded music. Don’t worry, we rocked that night!

JOS Paris Promo: "The Poet"

On the day of the Paris show, this promo was posted on the band’s Facebook page.

48 Hr. Film Fest: "Raspberry Bloodcake"

A film fest. A group of friends. 48 hours to write, cast, direct, edit, and screen? I’m in! This was the third 48 Hr. Film Fest I was a part of. In the first two, I was a scriptwriter.

This one…my directorial debut.

I’ve always tried to put myself in other’s shoes to understand what they may experience. As the director (and location supervisor), I remember sitting with the writers the night before filming and hearing the framework of the story. The next morning for crew call, the script had changed a bit. During filming, my DP got great shots. And, when I saw the final cut on the last day graded and sound-mixed, it was quite an accomplishment; even if the story changed quite a bit.

The main point…it was fun!
